We’ve always been big fans of Kanga ever since they began offering their pies a few years ago to hungry crowds at the Toronto Underground Market. It seemed like so many people we’re fixated with them and there’s good reason for it. These mini stuffed pies have become quite the sensation with Torontonians looking to get a taste of the land Down Under.
Last month, Founders Erynn Mayes and Megan Chan opened their first retail shop in the Entertainment District, at 65 Duncan Street. They raised about $16,000 on Kickstarter to fund the establishment and to continue their big pie dream. We couldn’t wait to check out the new space when he had the opportunity to do so this week and to spread the delicious word about it.
As we entered, we immediately noticed the shop’s Australian theme with a surfboard on the wall and the colourful boomerangs dangling from the ceiling. We we’re happily greeted by Erynn who introduced us to her selection of pies at the front display case.
We tried some of their menu favourites including the Kiwi Classic (minced beef filling with chunks of white cheddar cheese) and their Creamy Zucchini (roasted zucchini and caramelized onion in a peppery, garlicky cream-cheese sauce). It totally lived up to the hype. They are indeed damn good pies!
Surprisingly, we we’re told their sausages and spinach rolls are very popular especially for those looking to grab a quick bite for breakfast. The shop also carries locally-roasted coffee by Propeller.
We may not be making a trip to Australia anytime soon, but at least we know where to get our cravings for Aussie pie goodness in the city. Cheers mate!
