Toronto’s Mex scene is about to heat up with a new restaurant which is already starting to attract hungry crowds especially on the weekends.
Opened last month in Kensington Market by chef Arturo Anhalt from Milagro, San Cosme features authentic Mexican-style tortas – full-on flavour sandwiches loaded with everything from slow-roasted pork to Oaxaca cheese between a crispy, baguette style bun.
While not as widely known as the burrito or quesadilla, the torta is a staple of Mexican cuisine. It’s nice to see more attention being brought to another element to Mexican food in the city.
There are 9 kinds of tortas to choose from including the Cubana (smoked ham, pork, bacon, gouda, avocado, chipotle, mustard) and Pollo Con Mole (chicken, mole, crema, cotija cheese, red onions) and the Huevo (scrambled egg, chorizo, bacon, oaxaca, tomato, avocado). There’s also the Milanesa (breaded chicken, manchego, chipotle mayo, refritos, avocado, tomato, onion).
We can firmly attest to say these are serious sandwiches and there’s nothing dainty about them. They’re packed in, so make sure to grab a few napkins before you dig in as it’s a messy affair.
The teleras are custom made from Blackbird Baking Co. and are delivered fresh each morning. They are perfectly soft, chewy but sturdy. We’ve been told the secret of a good torta is the durability of the bun to withstand all the ingredients and it certainly holds up to the standard. The meat like the smoked ham is sourced from Sanagan’s Meat Locker and the cheese from Global Cheese. We love the local connection to the surrounding food businesses in Kensington Market that are showcased on the menu.
While it’s all about the tortas here, you can also get house-made aguas frescas, chips squirted with cajeta and lime juice, and deep-fried churros with dulce de leche.
We’ll be drooling our way to San Cosme for our next visit.
